A new study released by the CDC shows a doubling of new diabetes cases per year over the last 10 years. Most of this is due to the obesity epidemic. The report says that "90 percent of cases are Type 2 diabetes, the form linked to obesity." According to the study, West Virginia had the highest rate of diabetes at about 13 cases out of every thousand people. Minnesota came in with the least cases of diabetes, with about 5 in every thousand people.
Diabetes is one of those preventable diseases which is costing so much to the states and businesses. Even without factoring in the cost, we need to address these problems to prevent the onset of diabetes for kids and adults to have a healthier lifestyle. But addressing it will be beneficial for employers and health providers as well. In the current economic problem, people simply cannot afford to get illnesses that stay with them and require constant attention. Because of the economic situation, it becomes even more vital that we address chronic diseases like diabetes before they occur to reduce the burden of the high cost of treating such chronic but preventable diseases.
