The Vicious Cycle of Overeating.

Research on mice show that overeating can activate a response in individuals that can "promote overeating, contributing to increased levels of caloric overconsumption." What this means is that overeating can cause someone to overeat the next time. It throws off the system, making it imbalanced and tipping it over completely. This positive feedback loop can explain part of the problem why two-thirds of the country is obese or overweight. The article by US News also states that "prior research had shown that eating too much triggered inflammatory responses in muscles, liver and other metabolic tissues, changes that underlie the development of type 2 diabetes.

While this study has only been done on mice, it needs to be tested on humans as well, before we can really celebrate the findings. Because, if true, it can pave the way for new research in finding out exactly how these signals are being received, what chemicals are used to send the signals, what receptors are receiving the signal and so on. It could pave the way to developing drugs that can break this cycle of overeating and perhaps bring this terrible epidemic of obesity under control.
