Small business owners are desperate for health care reform, according to a survey released this week by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. In fact more than one in three small business owners who provide some health benefits for their employees list the rising cost of health care as their top concern.Healthcare is also one of the top concerns in New Jersey. I attended a conference where New Jersey business leaders voiced serious concerns about the issue. It is costing them billions here in NJ, yet it is not addressing the underlying problems of the workforce. People are getting sick and costing the businesses and community approximately $45 billion yearly. A lot of this is preventable, by addressing chronic disease. But this is hard and requires a cultural shift in both how we see the role of health care, but also on how we eat and exercise. The situation is dire, and addressing chronic disease is absolutely essential for US business to stay competitive.
